Much has been written recently about Spain being "backward", in the light of the undeniably shocking racist taunts and boos during the 'friendly' with England. This has always seemed like a massive generalisation (judging a country on the basis of idiots at a football game, stoked up by their own manager and the pre-press): I get annoyed when we are judged on the basis of the small minority of hooligans who go abroad and wreak havoc, so this seems unfair too. We may well be a few steps ahead in terms of multicultural diversity (and the issues around it), but it's a bit early to start preaching from the soapbox just yet....
All of which is by way of saying that Spain seems to be ahead of us on one front: renewable energy in housing. It was announced, the week before last, that Spain has made solar panels mandatory in new buildings, which they intend to increase the amount of solar panels (and therefore energy produced) by 10 times. If only we could have similarly brave and courageous moves over here. Instead, we get a great deal of huff and puff over pieces of legislation that are clearly beneficial....
